What Is Activated Charcoal?
Activated Charcoal is a black, fine powder made from many different sources including bone char, coconut shells, and even coal. It becomes “activated” by processing it at very high temperatures. This changes the internal structure from regular charcoal to more porous charcoal.
What Does Activated Charcoal do for Cats and Dogs?
Activated charcoal for dogs and cats is primarily used in veterinary medicine as a treatment for poisoning or toxic ingestions. When ingested, toxins can be adsorbed by the activated charcoal, preventing their absorption into the bloodstream.
For dogs and cats, activated charcoal can be a real hero. If they accidentally eat something dangerous, like a harmful plant or a yucky chemical, giving them activated charcoal (after talking to your vet, of course!) can help stop those bad things from getting into their body.
How Does Activated Charcoal Work for Dogs and Cats?
When administered orally, activated charcoal travels through the gastrointestinal tract without being absorbed into the body. As it passes through, it binds to various toxins and chemicals, preventing their absorption into the bloodstream. Instead, they are excreted with the feces.
Common Cases for Activated Charcoal Usage:
-
Ingestion of Toxins: Activated charcoal is often administered when a pet ingests substances like certain household chemicals, drugs, or even some types of poisonous plants.
-
Overdoses: In cases of drug overdoses or ingestion of medications at dangerous levels, activated charcoal can be used to help mitigate the effects.
-
Certain Foods and Plants: Some foods that are toxic to pets, like chocolate, and certain plants can be partially countered with activated charcoal.
How Much Activated Charcoal Should I Use for my Dog or Cat?
As noted prior, before taking activated charcoal, first consult with your local veterinarian to ensure best practices. After consultation, take one half (½) of a capsule per 25 pounds. Repeat daily until otherwise noted by your veterinarian.
